The Zincali; Or, An Account Of The Gypsies Of Spain, With An Original Collection Of Their Songs And Poetry, by George Borrow. Published by Wiley And Putnam, NY. Print date 1842. First U.S. edition (the English was 1841). xi, 323, 135, 55 pages, plus 8 pages of publisher ads at front and 4 in the rear. Two volumes in one.

Brown cloth boards have blindstamped designs on front, rear and spine, and bright gilt lettering on spine. Cloth is clean. Corners are worn. Top of spine is missing about a quarter inch and bottom has two tiny newest spits in the cloth and a 5/8" split and small hole at lower front joint. Inner hinges are intact and the binding is tight. Pages are bright, but have moderate foxing, worst at front.

Fascinating, indepth study of a maligned culture. This book is divided into two volumes. The first is history and culture. The second is further divided into a poetry section and a language section. The language divided into Gitano, Robber and Zincali, with a Zincali vocabulary at the end.
